The Easiest DIY Leather Headboard
If you guys follow me on Instagram, you probably already saw the video I made. BUT, in the off chance that the algorithm did fail me, maybe you didn't.
Mike and I are always doing things around our home, and I realized that a lot of it could be things that we teach other people. I think that after doing things around the home for years, we didn't realize how much we learned, and how much we could teach people.
It can be really intimidating trying to tackle those home weekend projects. You keep telling yourself that you're going to start this weekend. But, when Saturday morning rolls around, you find other things to keep you busy, and your weekend project gets put on the back burner.
One thing that I kept putting off was our bedroom. I had painted the accent wall a few months ago, but I knew that I wanted to add a headboard. Well, I finally got around to it! And now, I want to share with you guys an easy way to make a leather headboard! Follow along so you can make one for your home, too!
Get Your Base Ready
Cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to the width of your bed and the height of your preference. We have a kind size bed, so ours was 80" long and 30" high.
Cut out a Hole in the Middle
This is totally a step that you can leave out if you don't have the means to do it. I actually had Mike do this, so I don't expect anyone to do that part! He tapered the hole so that it could slide in and stay in place. You will see what this is all about in the future steps!
Cut a piece of Foam Lay Your Cushion Foam across the headboard and cut to size.
Take Your Fabric and Lay it Across the Front of the Headboard
Make sure that the fabric is smooth with no creases.
Cut the Fabric
You want to cut it to be 4" longer than the headboard on all four sides.
Fold the Edges Over and fasten
You can use glue (gorilla or fabric glue) or a staple gun. Whatever you are most comfortable with! I actually used a combination, because Mike wasn't home while I was working on it. I couldn't find the staple gun so I used the glue first, and then put a few staples in the corners to make sure everything was sealed
Pro Tip: Make sure you start from the middle and work your way to the side. You want to avoid any creases and rolls in the fabric.
Mount Your Finished Headboard to the Wall
This is where those tapered edges come into play! We fastened the cut out piece to the wall with a couple screws. Then, we just slid the headboard on. Such an easy and simple way to hang the bed, with very few screws to damage the walls! (We didn't show this in the video, but I will share it in part two!)
I'd thought I'd share with guys a video on how I made our headboard! Initially while I was making it, I was planning to put straps on it and hang it up that way, but, then I just started looking at it after we hung it up, I really just like how simple and minimal it is. Maybe one day I'll add that in, but for now, I'm just going to keep it simple!
