How to Work From Home With a Puppy

Mike and I are fortunate enough that our everyday life hasn't changed a whole lot. We both already work from home, and so we have basically become the sweatpant connoisseurs of the working from home tribe.

While working from home can be really productive, because you don't have as many distractions with your phone, co-workers, or emails, there's one thing that we are forgetting about here. A puppy. And while puppies are the best therapy, it can be a whole lot when you have to switch up your routine and now incorporate taking care of your dog 24/7 into the mix.

Since we've had Kona for over a year now, we have learned the do's and don'ts of working from home with a puppy. He is only a year old, and he is very, I repeat very, energetic. He is an Australian Shepard and Cattle Dog mix, so he needs a whole bunch of exercise.

So how do we do it you ask?

Training is Key

First thing is first, you have to be training your dog. That means they are pottle trained, they listen to your commands, and they respect you. If you don't have that, then that is something you need to work on!

Keep A Schedule

Kona knows right when we wake up, and gets feed and goes outside. He also knows that right around when the sun is setting, that he gets fed dinner. With this consictency, he isn't barking for food, or having expectations on getting fed. Maybe your dog will work best if they go for a walk when they wake up. Or maybe that's in the middle of the day. Whatever works, keep a schedule for them and they will know what to expect throughout the day!

Physical Activity

Dogs need to be active, and so do we. Plan out time for your dog to be outside and run around. Maybe your neighbors have a dog, too. You can still practice social distancing, but let the dogs romp around together! This will make them happy and tire them out.

Mental Training

Mental training is just as important as physical! Learning new tricks stimulates their minds, and they actually get tired from training. Need some tips on training ideas?

Take Breaks With Them

Mike and I take turns every couple of hours and go outside and play with Kona. Take a break and go for a walk with them! Whenever I have a call or meeting, I make a note to run around with Kona first so that he won't be all hyped up while I'm on the phone.

Get a Bell

We have a bell on our door and it is a lifesaver! Whenever Kona needs to go outside, he rings it. That way, he isn't barking or scratching the door. This was one of the first tricks we taught him, and it's been a game-changer!

Now that you have some tips on how to work from home with your dog, try them out!
