Timeless Interior Design: The Do's and Don'ts

Timeless design is quietly understated, simple and sophisticated. This style is one that is designed to be

functional, yet not bland and boring. Timeless style is subtle, adaptable and outlasts. It's a style that belongs to both its space and its environment. It's a space you admire today but also in ten years.

DO Layer with Antiques

Antiques are a sure fire way to give any space depth and age. The key is to mix and layer using different points in time to create a look that is eclectic. In the Neutral on Neutrals project we completed, our vision was to create a neutral space with a lot of interest. Sophisticated and easy on the eyes yet with a story to tell. For this we paid close attention to placement and quality of décor. The lighting and primitive vases make the space feel familiar but not outdated.

DON'T Mistake Tired for Aged

When working with antiques, it’s important to understand the difference between perfectly aged and past it.

Restoring an antique too much will strip away part of its story and life scars. However, there is a sweet spot, it is incredibly important that your antiques are functional and work well. A loose hinge or a missing piece doesn’t create an authentic aged feel, it simply feels worn-out. Be sure to take time to look at the pieces you are using carefully. Do they call for a complete restoration? A few touch-ups? Or are they perfect just as they are? Asking those key questions is important.

DO Pick Traditional Colors

If you are looking to create a timeless home then you may want choose neutrals for walls and big furnishing pieces. Neutrals are perfect for accentuating a specific room or space without the risk of overpowering it. In classic homes, off-white, gray, and beige shades also have a strong presence. Neutrals look beautiful against the bright and crisp white architectural moldings and trim around arches, doorways, and ceilings of older homes.

DON'T Negate Colorful Moments

Every room in your timeless home should have a "moment". A picture perfect area, if you will, that transcends time but also draws you in. Mixing metals, artwork and wallpaper are always a great way to build that without overwhelming the space.

DO Resist Clutter and Too Much Furniture

Let a room breathe. Not every nook and corner needs a piece of furniture or a piece of wall décor to fill up space. Incorporate just enough and a room will feel clean and airy.

DON'T Forget About Functionality

Listen, I get it. You have a big family or you're constantly hosting game night or you have hundreds of memorabilia. People need a place to sit and you need storage so a timeless but unpractical home is never something we're after. Start with your priorities and make sure the space takes care of it first then move on to layering. A few questions to consider; Do I need to add more seating in this living room? Can I add shelving to this wall without overcrowding? If I add built-ins, would that allow for less furniture and more walking space?

DO Use Classic Patterns

Part of what gives a room timeless style is the use of classic patterns such as damasks, botanicals, stripes, and plaids. As a general rule, it's best to stay away from trendy prints such as chevrons, animal prints, and strong geometrics. Remember also that it's best to use at least three patterns in a single room, and vary the scale of all three. It's also important to distribute the patterns evenly throughout the room. If the majority are all on one side of the room the whole space will look unbalanced.

DON'T Follow Trends

Trends are anything but timeless. In fact, it's rare for any trend to last more than a few years, and they pretty much have built-in expiry dates. A trend whose day has come and gone can immediately date a room, and no matter what else you put in there it will be tough to overcome. However, you can still have fun with trends in small doses. For example, if there's a particularly trendy color you really want to use bring it in using small, easy-to-change items such as pillows, throws and rugs. If you want a timeless look keep it small and keep it subtle.

These simple tips will keep your space looking like a million bucks for a long time but still showcase your unique way of living.
